ERIK JONES - SEPT. 24, 2016 - # 3
WITH ERICK JONES
1. zooming into the Truck Series and swooping off with the championship and a full-time Xfinity Series ride, there's no shortage of young drivers hoping to take the same path to NASCAR stardom. Standing in their way, however, is a stout lineup of veteran drivers who, feeling bruised after Jones, on their watch no less, became the youngest champion in series history, look to re-establish their dominance in NASCAR's No. 3 series. NASCAR veteran or newcomer, all the drivers will have to adjust to the new Chase format being implemented for the first time in series history.
2. Under the new format, which differs a bit from the system used in the Sprint Cup Series, the seven-race Truck Series Chase will begin at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept 24. It will feature eight drivers and two elimination rounds, with four drivers competing in the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. A win in the first 16 races all but guarantees a driver entry into the Truck Series Chase, provided that the driver is in the top 30n in points and has attempted to qualify for each race. The first round, the Round of 8, consists of the races at New Hampshire, Las Vegas and Talladega. All drives will have their points adjusted to 2,000, with three additional bonus points added to their total for each win in the first 16 races. If a driver wins a race in the Round of 8, the driver automatically advances to the next round. The remaining available positions ( 1__6 ) that have not been filled wins will be filled on points. Each driver who advances to the Round of 6 ( Martinsville, Texas, Phoenix ) then will have their points reset to 3,000. Drivers who win a race in the Round of 6 automatically advance to the Championship 4 at Homestead will have their points reset to 4,000. The highest finishing Championship 4 driver will win the Championship.
{ 3 }. - Another change, this one exclusive to the Trucks Series, will see NASCAR bring out competition caution periods every 20 minutes during each race with the exception of Eldora. Once the race starts, if a caution does not come out during the first 20 minutes of the race, NASCAR will issue a competition caution. Once the race returns to green, the 20 minute countdown clock will start again and if no caution comes out in a 20 minute span, NASCAR will again issue a competition caution. The caution clock will be turned off with 20 laps to go at all events in the series, with the exception of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Pocono Raceway, where the clock will be turned off with 10 laps remaing.
